והוה בתר דמית שאול ודוד תב מלממחי ית דבית עמלק ויתיב דוד בצקלג יומין תרין:
thryn ywmyn btsqlg dwd wythyb emlq dbyth yth mlmmkhy thb wdwd shawl dmyth bthr whwh
After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,

והוה ביומא תליתאה והא גברא אתא ממשריתא מלות שאול ולבושוהי מבזעין ועפרא רמי ברישיה והוה במיתוהי לות דוד ונפל על ארעא וסגיד:
wsgyd area el wnpl dwd lwth bmythwhy whwh bryshyh rmy wepra mbzeyn wlbwshwhy shawl mlwth mmshrytha atha gbra wha thlythah bywma whwh
on the third day, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.

ואמר ליה דוד אי מדין את אתי ואמר ליה ממשריתא דישראל אשתזיבית:
ashthzybyth dyshral mmshrytha lyh wamr athy ath mdyn ay dwd lyh wamr
David said to him, “Where do you come from?” He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.”

ואמר ליה דוד מה הוה פתגמא חוי כען לי ואמר דאפיך עמא מן קרבא ואף סגי נפל מן עמא ואתקטלו ואף שאול ויהונתן בריה מיתו:
mythw bryh wyhwnthn shawl wap wathqTlw ema mn npl sgy wap qrba mn ema dapyk wamr ly ken khwy pthgma hwh mh dwd lyh wamr
David said to him, “How did it go? Please tell me.” He answered, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead. Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”

ואמר דוד לעולמא דמחוי ליה איכדין ידעת ארי מית שאול ויהונתן בריה:
bryh wyhwnthn shawl myth ary ydeth aykdyn lyh dmkhwy lewlma dwd wamr
David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”

ואמר עולמא דמחוי ליה אתערעא אתערעית בטורא דגלבוע והא שאול סמיך על מורניתיה והא רתיכיא ומשרית פרשיא אדבקוהי:
adbqwhy prshya wmshryth rthykya wha mwrnythyh el smyk shawl wha dglbwe bTwra athereyth atherea lyh dmkhwy ewlma wamr
The young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance on Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed close behind him.

ואתפני לאחורוהי וחזני וקרא לי ואמרית הא אנא:
ana ha wamryth ly wqra wkhzny lakhwrwhy wathpny
When he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. I answered, ‘Here I am.’
8
ואמר לי מן את ואמרית ליה עמלקאה אנא:
ana emlqah lyh wamryth ath mn ly wamr
He said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
9
ואמר לי קום כען עלי וקטולני ארי אחדני רתיתא ארי כל עוד נפשי בי:
by npshy ewd kl ary rthytha akhdny ary wqTwlny ely ken qwm ly wamr
He said to me, ‘Please stand beside me, and kill me, for anguish has taken hold of me because my life lingers in me.’

וקמית עלוהי וקטלתיה ארי ידענא ארי לא יחי בתר די נפל ונסיבית כלילא די על רישיה וטוטפתא דעל דרעיה ואיתיתינון לות רבוני הלכא:
hlka rbwny lwth waythythynwn dreyh del wTwTptha ryshyh el dy klyla wnsybyth npl dy bthr ykhy la ary ydena ary wqTlthyh elwhy wqmyth
So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”

ואתקיף דוד בלבושוהי ובזענון ואף כל גבריא דעמיה:
demyh gbrya kl wap wbzenwn blbwshwhy dwd wathqyp
Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise.

וספדו ובכו וצמו עד רמשא על שאול ועל יהונתן בריה ועל עמא דיי ועל בית ישראל ארי אתקטלו בחרבא:
bkhrba athqTlw ary yshral byth wel dyy ema wel bryh yhwnthn wel shawl el rmsha ed wtsmw wbkw wspdw
They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Yahweh, and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

ואמר דוד לעולמא דמחוי ליה אי מדין את ואמר בר גבר גיור עמלקאה אנא:
ana emlqah gywr gbr br wamr ath mdyn ay lyh dmkhwy lewlma dwd wamr
David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” He answered, “I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite.”

ואמר ליה דוד איכדין לא דחלתא לאושטא ידך לחבלא ית משיחא דיי:
dyy mshykha yth lkhbla ydk lawshTa dkhltha la aykdyn dwd lyh wamr
David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy Yahweh’s anointed?”

וקרא דוד לחד מעולמיא ואמר קרב שלוט ביה ומחהי וקטליה:
wqTlyh wmkhhy byh shlwT qrb wamr mewlmya lkhd dwd wqra
David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and cut him down!” He struck him so that he died.
16
ואמר ליה דוד חובת קטולך תהי ברישך ארי פומך אסהיד בך למימר אנא קטלית ית משיחא דיי:
dyy mshykha yth qTlyth ana lmymr bk ashyd pwmk ary bryshk thhy qTwlk khwbth dwd lyh wamr
David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain Yahweh’s anointed.’”

ואלא דוד ית אליא הדין על שאול ועל יהונתן בריה:
bryh yhwnthn wel shawl el hdyn alya yth dwd wala
David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son

ואמר לאלפא בני יהודה מיגד בקשתא הא היא כתיבה על ספרא דאוריתא:
dawrytha spra el kthybh hya ha bqshtha mygd yhwdh bny lalpa wamr
(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

אתעתדתון ישראל על בית תוקפיכון אתרמיתון קטילין איכדין אתקטלו גיבריא:
gybrya athqTlw aykdyn qTylyn athrmythwn thwqpykwn byth el yshral athethdthwn
“Your glory, Israel, was slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

לא תחוון בגת לא תבסרון בשוקי אשקלון דלמא יחדין בגת פלשתאי דילמא ידוצון בגת ערליא:
erlya bgth ydwtswn dylma plshthay bgth ykhdyn dlma ashqlwn bshwqy thbsrwn la bgth thkhwwn la
Don’t tell it in Gath. Don’t publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

טורי גלבוע לא יחות עליכון טלא ומטרא לא תהי בכון עללא כמסת דיעבדון מניה חלתא ארי תמן איתברו תריסי גיבריא תריסא דשאול דמשיח כדבמשחא:
kdbmshkha dmshykh dshawl thrysa gybrya thrysy aythbrw thmn ary khltha mnyh dyebdwn kmsth ella bkwn thhy la wmTra Tla elykwn ykhwth la glbwe Twry
You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, the shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

מדם קטילין מתרב גברין גירי קשתא דיהונתן לא מסתחרין לאחורא וחרבא דשאול לא תיבא ריקן:
ryqn thyba la dshawl wkhrba lakhwra msthkhryn la dyhwnthn qshtha gyry gbryn mthrb qTylyn mdm
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, Jonathan’s bow didn’t turn back. Saul’s sword didn’t return empty.

שאול ויהונתן דרחימין וחביבין בחייהון ובמותהון לא אתפרשו מעמהון מנשריא קלילין מאריותא גברין:
gbryn marywtha qlylyn mnshrya memhwn athprshw la wbmwthhwn bkhyyhwn wkhbybyn drkhymyn wyhwnthn shawl
Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.

בנת ישראל על שאול בכאה דהוה מלביש לכון לבושי צבעונין ומוביל לכון תפנוקין ומסיק תיקוני דהבא על לבושכון:
lbwshkwn el dhba thyqwny wmsyq thpnwqyn lkwn wmwbyl tsbewnyn lbwshy lkwn mlbysh dhwh bkah shawl el yshral bnth
You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you delicately in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your clothing.

איכדין אתקטלו גבריא בגו קרבא יהונתן על בית תוקפך אתקטלתא:
athqTltha thwqpk byth el yhwnthn qrba bgw gbrya athqTlw aykdyn
How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle! Jonathan was slain on your high places.

עקת לי עלך אחי יהונתן חביבת לי לחדא מפרשא רחמתך לי מרחימת תרתין נשין:
nshyn thrthyn mrkhymth ly rkhmthk mprsha lkhda ly khbybth yhwnthn akhy elk ly eqth
I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women.
